UNT began the process of revitalizing its core curriculum in the fall of 2006, when the State of Texas required that undergraduate programs be reduced to 120 hours. After extensive faculty input, the Faculty Senate voted to reduce the UNT Core from 47 to 42 hours. At that time, the Senate identified an interim core and embarked upon a process for review and revitalization of the content of those 42 hours.

Faculty Senate Resolution on Reduction of the Core

The four-step process for revitalizing the core content will take place over three years, addressing each of the following questions in turn.

What is the mission of the core? (Step 1 DEFINE - Spring 2008)
How is responsibility for that mission distributed across the full set of courses in the core? (Step 2 DISTRIBUTE - Fall 2008)
How are those courses designed to support the core? (Step 3 DESIGN - Spring 2009)
When does the new core become effective? (Step 4 DEPLOY - Fall 2010)

The details of each step are outlined below. This website will serve as a portal for resources needed to work through this process together. Please provide your input and feedback.

PROCESS OVERVIEW

Step 1 - DEFINE (Spring 2008) What is the mission of the core? (completed)

All component areas follow the same process. Detail regarding dates.

Step 2 - DISTRIBUTE (Fall 2008) How is the mission distributed across the full set of courses in the core?

Establishing the required objective for each core component area

During the Fall of 2008, the Faculty Senate Core Task Force will host a series of forums, each focused on a different "component" (content area) of the core curriculum. In each forum those present will provide input to determine how that particular component area will address the overarching objectives that describe the mission of the core. The "Exemplary Educational Objectives (EEOs)" required by the THECB for that component area will also be examined. The Faculty Senate Task Force will take the input from each forum and outline the learning outcomes that a course must have to be included in that particular component area in the core. The requirements for assessment of the core will also be addressed in these forums.

The Faculty Senate Core Task Force will present the recommendations developed from these forums to the University Curriculum Committe (UCC) and finally to the Faculty Senate for final approval.

Once the requirements for a component area are approved by the Senate, individual courses may make application for inclusion in the core. Details of that process will be posted here and communicated at the forums.

The forums will be held in the Faculty Senate room, 330, Wooten Hall, following the schedule posted below. You can print the schedule and agenda here. You can print the Faculty Senate approved Overarching Objectives for the UNT Core here. The EEOs for each component area are linked below.

Step 3 - DESIGN (AY08-09) How are individual courses designed to support the mission?

Approving individual courses for inclusion in the core

Department submits syllabi to oversight committee or core curriculum demonstrating how required objectives will be addressed

Oversight committee or core curriculum sends recommendation to UCC

UCC provides recommendation to Faculty Senate for final approval

During Spring 2009, any necessary course changes must be submitted to the UCC and Faculty Senate.

Step 4 - DEPLOY (Falll 2010) The new core will be implemented in Fall 2010.

Changes submitted by the end of Spring 2009 can be included in the Undergraduate Catalogue for Fall 2010, the effective date of the new core.
